Advancing Ultraviolet Laser Technology: Project FELS 244
Xiton Photonics has been awarded approximately €843,000 in funding by the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of Rhineland-Palatinate to develop a novel, solid-state laser source operating at 244 nm for advanced applications in the optical industry.
The project FELS 244 (“Development of a Solid-State Laser Source at 244 nm”) is supported through the InnoTop funding program and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Within the scope of FELS 244, Xiton Photonics is developing a deep ultraviolet (DUV), solid-state laser designed to replace conventional, frequency-doubled, argon-ion gas lasers currently used in fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscription. The new system is expected to reduce energy consumption by up to a factor of 100, enabling annual CO₂ savings of approximately 180 tons per system, operated in two-shift mode.
By offering a compact, efficient, and maintenance-friendly alternative to legacy gas laser technology, the FELS 244 platform has the potential to drive a paradigm shift in UV laser applications within fiber optics manufacturing. Furthermore, the project reinforces the Kaiserslautern region as a center for photonics innovation and strengthens local value chains through regional sourcing and high-tech manufacturing.
About Xiton Photonics
Xiton Photonics has been developing and manufacturing high quality, diode-pumped, solid-state (DPSS) laser sources for more than 15 years. Their core expertise lies in nonlinear optical conversion, which enables the engineering of high-power laser systems for almost any desired wavelength in a range from 185 nm in the deep-UV to 5 µm in the mid-infrared or even further in the far infrared. Their lasers provide high reliability, excellent beam profile, high average output power, and high stability. Due to these outstanding properties, their laser sources are used by leading manufacturers, operating 24/7 in production lines across the globe.
