Calculating the LIDT for a Picosecond Pulse
Predicting the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) in the picosecond (ps) regime has been a persistent problem in high-power laser design. Reliable models exist either side of it, for nanosecond (ns) and femtosecond (fs) pulses, but the ps regime itself has lacked one.
Manx Precision Optics (MPO)ββ has addressed this lack by calculating the required LIDT for a given pulse duration directly from material properties, rather than relying on empirical destructive testing.
In practice, this changes how optics are specified and used:
- Component selection becomes quantitative. Engineers can match optics precisely to system requirements instead of building in a wide safety margin.
- Lab testing aligns more closely with field performance. Factoring in repetition rate and illumination conditions at the design stage reduces the gap between certified performance and real-world operation.
- Development cycles shorten. A calculated LIDT requirement reduces the number of sample optics that need to be tested and destroyed.
The model is expected to be refined further as more experimental data become available. This model represents a step towards multi-kilowatt-class ultrafast laser systems running closer to their true performance potential.
