Building Canada’s First Quantum Communication Testbed
Since 2022, ID Quantique (IDQ) has been collaborating with Numana to build Canada’s first quantum communication testbed called “Kirq.”
Kirq is a testing platform for quantum communication that combines quantum and classical technologies in real-world conditions. As such, Kirq helps to reduce costs and minimize the risks encountered by organizations and businesses in the implementation of emerging technologies.
IDQ’s QKD Systems have been deployed in Montreal and Sherbrooke, demonstrating that the technology is ready for production and can be integrated with classical security communication systems from major players like TELUS, Bell, and Ciena.
Good news: The Kirk project is expanding. The new partners joining the testbed include Nokia and Honeywell Aerospace Technologies. The objective is to combine terrestrial QKD with classical networks and satellite QKD networks in the next two years.
Quantum Key Distribution
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a cutting-edge technology that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to create unbreakable encryption keys. Unlike traditional encryption methods, QKD ensures that any attempt to intercept the communication is immediately detectable, offering unprecedented levels of security. As we move towards the era of 6G and beyond, QKD is poised to become a cornerstone technology, ensuring that sensitive data remains secure in an increasingly connected world.
About ID Quantique
Founded in 2001, ID Quantique (IDQ) is the world leader in quantum-safe crypto solutions, designed to protect data for the future. The company provides random number generation, quantum-safe security, and quantum detection systems to the financial industry, enterprises, and government organizations globally. IDQ’s quantum random number generator has been validated according to global standards and independent agencies and is the reference in highly regulated and mission-critical industries such as security, encryption, critical infrastructure, and IoT — where trust is paramount.
