Closing the Picosecond Gap: A New Model for LIDT
Last month Managing Director and CTO of Manx Precision Optics (MPO) Helmut Kessler travelled to Rochester, NY to SPIE’s Laser Damage Symposium to present a paper entitled, “LIDT from the nano to the femtosecond regime: a closer look at the relationship between Laser Induced Damage Threshold (LIDT), refractive index, and absorption.”
This research addresses a challenge that has frustrated laser scientists for years: the “picosecond gap.” While dependable models exist for nanosecond and femtosecond lasers, the picosecond regime has lacked a reliable predictive framework, often forcing manufacturers into expensive, conservative design cycles.
Manx’s new model is a gamechanger by establishing the link between LIDT, refractive index, and absorption to enable proactive design.
Key benefits include:
- Predictive design: Engineers can now calculate the required LIDT using fundamental material properties.
- Cost reduction: Accurate modelling prevents the over-specification of optical components.
- Accelerated R&D: Simulation removes the need for inefficient “design-test-break” cycles.
A full technical paper will be published shortly.
