Considering the Physical Realities of Large Optics
During his presentation at Optatec, Dr Helmut Kessler, Managing Director of Manx Precision Optics (MPO), highlighted a practical but often underestimated factor in scaling up large-format optics: handleability.
When you move from 100-mm optics to 300 mm, 400 mm or even 1 m diameters, you are not just scaling dimensions. You are scaling weight, logistics, risk, and process complexity.
Based on fused silica (2.203 g/cm³), a 300-mm optic can already weigh more than 6 kg. At 500 mm, that rises to over 30 kg. At a 1-m diameter, you are handling nearly 225 kg of high-value precision material.
That has implications for:
- Substrate transport and storage
- Polishing strategies and tooling
- Coating chamber capacity
- Metrology setup
- Quality assurance processes
- Health and safety
- Production scalability
As demand grows for large-aperture, high‑LIDT optics, particularly for high-energy and laser fusion applications, manufacturing realities matter just as much as optical design.
