Developing AI-Based Testing of Laser-Welded Screws
Laser-welded screw joints are gaining traction — but guaranteeing their reliability remains a key challenge.
Together with Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK, the LMT (Laser Microtechnology division) at LTB Lasertechnik Berlin is developing the KONQUILAS project. This is a fully automated system for real-time, 100% inspection of laser-welded screws. By combining LTB’s laser and acoustic technologies with AI-based signal analysis, the team aims to detect defects like pores or cracks immediately after welding — thus ensuring maximum safety and quality.
Co-funded through the Pro FIT program by Investitionsbank Berlin and the European Union, the project sets the foundation for safer, more efficient production of safety-critical components, such as bridge screws. This project supports compliance with future quality standards.
