Excitation of Fluorescent Quantum Light Sources on a CubeSat Mission
A recent study by the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut and the Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH), in collaboration with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, details the development and qualification of a fiber-coupled, extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) system operating at a wavelength of 698 nm. The paper is entitled, “A 698 nm laser system for excitation of fluorescent quantum light sources on a CubeSat mission.”
Engineered for a 3U CubeSat platform, the system is designed to enable blue-detuned excitation of single-photon sources based on color centers in hexagonal boron nitride.
A critical aspect of the research involved evaluating the spectral performance of the laser diodes after exposure to severe environmental stress. For this, the researchers utilized a DEMON (Double Echelle Monochromator) spectrometer from LTB Lasertechnik Berlin GmbH, which enabled them to execute high-resolution line width characterization. The LTB DEMON confirmed that the laser line-width remained consistently below 10 picometers. This measurement verified that the spectral definition required for space-borne quantum operations was maintained, despite a simulated launch and mock environmental degradation.
At present, the integrated laser unit is operating nominally in low-Earth orbit following its successful launch.
