First Citywide, Dedicated Quantum Network in Geneva
Quantum just went citywide! IonQ, via their subsidiary ID Quantique (IDQ), has successfully launched the Geneva Quantum Network (GQN), Switzerland’s first dedicated quantum network, alongside a world-class public-private consortium. This deployment accelerates the mission to secure Geneva’s backbone infrastructure and provides a platform available to organizations to learn and test new use cases using quantum technologies.
This landmark initiative in Geneva connects leading institutions like CERN, ROLEX SA, the University of Geneva, and others, establishing foundational quantum infrastructure for Europe.
IonQ CEO Niccolo De Masi notes this is a key step in integrating quantum computing, networking, and sensing to build scalable quantum infrastructure globally.
Why this matters:
- Research & Innovation: Enabling deep research in quantum communications, including the distribution of entangled photons.
- Ultra-Precise Timing: Utilizing CERN’s White Rabbit synchronization and Rolex’s cutting-edge atomic clock to distribute ultra-precise time signals.
- Security & Foundation: Built on IDQ’s Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and quantum detection systems, leveraging hundreds of kilometers of existing fiber.
