Have You Heard of Kalman Filtering?
Kalman filtering is an algorithm used for state estimation in a linear system, combining predictions and measurement updates. R. E. Kalman, a Hungarian-American scientist, proposed this method in 1960.
Kalman filtering is particularly useful in correcting instrument drift and improving long-term reproducibility. Technologies such as Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) can also benefit from it.
In a recent paper, entitled “Long-term reproducibility detection method for quantitative LIBS using Klaman filtering,” an effort was made to improve the long-term reproducibility of a LIBS setup through the use of the Kalman filtering algorithm. The study first established internal calibration curves for six elements (Mn, Si, Cr, Ni, Ti, and Al) using standard single-pulse LIBS instrumentation and then verified them quantitatively over the duration of ten days. Kalman filtering was then applied to correct instrument drift, resulting in a significant reduction in the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the measured elements. The outcome was that the long-term reproducibility of quantitative LIBS could be significantly enhanced.
The Aryelle 200 spectrometer from LTB Lasertechnik Berlin collected the signals from the LIBS plasma emission. This spectrometer’s unique features, namely its high spectral resolution and a wide spectral detection range, were the main reasons for selecting Aryelle.
