Helping to Reduce Europe’s Titanium Imports
The EURO-TITAN consortium is a new initiative aimed at reducing Europe’s dependence on titanium imports by developing methods to produce titanium from metallurgical waste, thereby lowering CO2 emissions. The project involves 22 partners from 9 countries, including LTB Lasertechnik Berlin (LTB).
LTB is expected to contribute its expertise and experience in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) for process monitoring, to enable continuous quality control at key points in the process chain. The project not only focuses on recycling titanium from industrial waste, but also aims to make the production process more economical, with recycled titanium expected to be 15% cheaper than imported materials. This initiative aligns with the EU’s raw materials strategy and seeks to increase the recycling rate of titanium from 1% to 30%, enhancing the EU’s supply chain for critical industries like aerospace and pharmaceuticals. Overall, EURO-TITAN represents a significant move towards greater independence in raw materials and a more sustainable, circular economy in Europe.
