Improving Our Understanding of Meteoroid Composition
A new study was conducted by P. Matlovič et al. and a group of scientists from various institutions. The research group included Comenius University – Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave, University of Stuttgart, Naturhistorisches Museum Wien and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, IMCCE-Observatoire de Paris | PSL and University of Southern Queensland. The study enhances our understanding of meteoroid compositions. Their paper is entitled “Spectral properties of ablating meteorite samples for improved meteoroid composition diagnostics.”
The investigation analyzes the emission spectra of different meteorite samples. The research focused on identifying and quantifying distinct spectral features of meteorite types with known compositions to improve the classification of meteoroids observed at entry into the atmosphere. Emission spectra were collected from meteorite samples during wind tunnel ablation experiments, which recreated conditions similar to those experienced by low-speed meteors.
The analysis revealed that the line intensity variations in the spectra correspond to differences in the original meteorite compositions, aiding in distinguishing between various meteorite classes. The results can now provide a reference dataset that can be used to classify meteoroid compositions more accurately based on meteor spectra observations.
The ARYELLE 200 high-resolution echelle spectrometer from LTB Lasertechnik Berlin played a key role in enabling the detailed spectral analysis.
