Improving Signal-to-Noise Ratio
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) is a measure used in many disciplines, but is most common in analyzing electrical signals. SNR is the ratio of the power of a signal (desired input) to the power of the background noise (undesired input).
Typically, the signal power “is what it is” (that is, it can’t be controlled or increased). Therefore the path to improving the SNR is to reduce the background noise. This enables better discrimination of the desired information from the undesired background environment.
