Is Your Mirror Design Aligned with Laser System Performance?
In ultrafast laser systems, pulse degradation is often traced back to dispersion that was not fully considered at the specification stage.
As pulse durations move towards sub-100 fs, spectral bandwidths widen. Mirrors that once covered 40 or 60 nm may now be expected to maintain controlled reflectance and stable group delay dispersion (GDD) across 100 nm or more, often at 45° incidence and in a defined polarization state.
At the same time:
- Pulse energies are increasing, tightening LIDT constraints.
- Beam paths are more complex, enabling residual GDD to accumulate.
- Efficiency targets are stricter, making fractional reflectance losses significant.
The challenge is not one extreme parameter. It is achieving broad bandwidth, high reflectivity, flat GDD response, and high LIDT in a single coating design. However, these factors are interdependent. Expanding bandwidth increases layer complexity. Optimizing LIDT restricts material choice. Flattening dispersion requires precise phase control. Without clear system context, specifications can quickly become unstable or over-engineered.
Manx Precision Optics (MPO) treats mirror design as a coupled engineering problem, evaluating GDD, reflectance, and LIDT together against real operating conditions.
If you are defining optics for an ultrafast or high-energy system, involve MPO before finalizing your specification. An early technical discussion can clarify trade-offs, reduce redesign risk, and deliver a mirror design aligned with system performance.
