Lasers Used on JET for Fusion Fuel Measurements
Scientists of EUROfusion have tested Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) on the Joint European Torus (JET) to measure fusion fuel retention. Using remote-handling, the system detected hydrogen isotopes from JET’s tritium-deuterium fuel mix.
Highlights of this project include:
- First time LIBS operated remotely in a harsh environment
- Over 800 locations analyzed
- Remote operation to reduce hazard for operators
- Supports tritium inventory management for future reactors
The first results have already been published and will be presented at the 20th International Conference on Plasma-Facing Materials and Components for Fusion Applications in 2025.
The Aryelle 200 Echelle Spectrometer from LTB Lasertechnik Berlin was used in the setup of this research.
