LIDT Is Not Just a Number
Laser-Induced Damage Threshold (LIDT) is one of those specs that gets quoted in datasheets and procurement docs without much thought. But in high-energy laser system design, misunderstanding LIDT can be the difference between a reliable system and an expensive failure.
Here’s what’s often missed:
- It shifts. Pulse duration, beam diameter, wavelength – all of these change your effective LIDT. Scaling laws exist, but they break down entirely below nanosecond pulse durations. What worked in your calculations may not hold in the real world.
- Test conditions are everything. Facility cleanliness, laser conditioning, number of sites tested — all influence the result. An LIDT figure without context is close to meaningless.
- Damage starts before you can see it. Absorbing defects heated to plasma. Nodules ejected by the pulse. Pits forming deep in the coating. By the time it’s visible, the damage is already done.
Manx Precision Optics (MPO) doesn’t just quote LIDT values, they engineer for them. From electric field distribution in coating design to contamination control in their facility, every decision is made with damage threshold in mind.
Because in high-power optics, the margin between performance and failure is thinner than most people realize.
