Real-Time Spectroscopic Analysis inside the JET Tokamak
How do we monitor what is happening inside a nuclear fusion reactor without taking it apart? A new study highlights a major milestone in fusion diagnostics. The team of researchers successfully used Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to analyze the internal walls of the Joint European Torus (JET), the world’s leading test bed for the upcoming ITER project. The paper is entitled, “In Situ Chemical Characterization by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy of a HFGC Tile from the JET Divertor Through In-Depth Chemical Analysis and Linear Correlation.”
The Challenge: In a fusion reactor, materials from the walls are constantly eroded and redeposited, often “trapping” unburned fuel like tritium. To keep these reactors running safely and efficiently, scientists need to know the exact composition of these layers and how thick they are, all while the components remain inside the machine.
The Solution: By mounting a compact laser tool on a robotic arm (the MASCOT manipulator), the team performed “in-depth” chemical profiling. This enabled them to “peel back” the layers of the reactor tiles—shot by laser shot—measuring everything from beryllium deposits to the underlying tungsten coating.
The Instrumentation: The measurements were supported by the Aryelle 200 Echelle spectrograph from LTB Lasertechnik Berlin. Its high spectral resolution enabled the differentiation of closely spaced emission lines. Stable signal quality was maintained even with a 20-m optical fiber connection, enabling detection of elements such as hydrogen isotopes at sub-micrometer spatial resolution.
This research is very important as it is not just about JET, it is a roadmap for ITER and future fusion power plants. Proving that we can monitor fuel retention in situ is a massive step toward making clean, limitless fusion energy a reality.
