Simple and Fast Method for Source Identification and Verification
It was a pleasure for LTB Lasertechnik Berlin to be part of the recent study with Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Kiel University. This investigation tackles a crucial challenge in the lithium industry: Source identification and verification with a simple and fast method, using it for digital battery passports. The current standard method, MC-ICP-MS, is expensive and requires complex sample preparation. This research was published in a paper, entitled “Lithium isotope ratio analysis of geological samples using atomic absorption spectrometry with improved spectral resolution.”
This work proposes a game-changer: High-Resolution Continuum Source Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (HR-CS-AAS), using the improved HR-DEMON spectrometer. LTB developed this instrument in close collaboration with BAM in Berlin. The special feature of the HR-DEMON is the significantly increased spectral resolution in comparison to a standard DEMON for a more precise data acquisition. The HR-DEMON also offers improved sampling conditions for analyzing narrow spectral lines (specifically the Li 2 2 P←2 2 S transition, which has an isotope shift of 15 pm). Therefore, overall sensitivity of the measurements is increased for lithium concentrations. The result of these improvements are more accurate and reliable lithium isotope measurements! This advancement can pave the way for more sustainable lithium extraction practices by effective implementation of digital battery passports for responsible sourcing.
