Using LIBS to Analyze Stainless Steel Welds
In a paper entitled, “In situ chemical analysis of duplex stainless steel weld by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy,” the team discuss the use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for in situ chemical analysis of duplex stainless steel welds. LIBS is an almost non-destructive and very accurate method for measuring chemical compositions during the welding process.
The authors then utilized the partial least squares (PLS) method to analyze the major alloying elements. This method overall provides valuable insights into the welding process and can be further used for controlling and preventing weld seam irregularities.
The experimental setup for the LIBS measurements included an ARYELLE 200 spectrometer from LTB Lasertechnik Berlin GmbH. The ARYELLE 200 is a very compact, high resolution Echelle spectrometer. This spectrometer features a broad wavelength range, while offering excellent spectral resolution at the same time. The information obtained from in situ chemical analysis with LIBS can be used for direct monitoring of the welding process, ultimately leading to more efficient and controlled welding operations.
