What Is the Physical Meaning of LIDT?
In high-energy laser optics, LIDT is not a standalone (dimensionless) number. Laser-induced damage threshold is usually expressed as fluence, in J/cm² and is defined by ISO 21254 as the highest laser radiation incident on an optical component where the extrapolated probability of damage is zero.
In practical terms the value depends on the test conditions, including:
- Wavelength – Different wavelengths interact with coatings in different ways.
- Pulse duration – Nanosecond, picosecond and femtosecond pulses can involve different damage mechanisms.
- Beam size – A larger test spot has a higher chance of hitting a defect.
- Number of pulses – A single shot and a sustained burst can give different results.
- Test conditions – Even the cleanliness of the testing environment plays a role.
- Test laboratory – Different labs take different approaches and not all measurements are equal.
For optical engineers LIDT values should always be read alongside the pulse, wavelength, beam size and test methodology.
At Manx Precision Optics Ltd., high LIDT coatings are developed through in-house coating expertise, metrology and external testing partnerships with several leading test laboratories.
