Why Is a Window Not Really a Passive Surface?
In high-energy laser systems, a window is not a passive component. An uncoated surface reflects around 4 percent of incident light. In high-gain or high-peak power systems, that reflection can destabilize cavities, introduce parasitic oscillations, and reduce usable output.
Effective AR-coated windows must address several factors:
- Reflectivity control – Single wavelength AR designs can reduce reflectivity to below 0.25 percent, with optimized coatings achieving below 0.1 percent at specific wavelengths.
- Electric field management – Coating designs that shift intensity peaks away from layer interfaces support higher laser-induced damage threshold.
- Substrate purity – Low-OH-fused silica, typically below 1 ppm hydroxyl content, minimizes absorption and thermal lensing.
- Surface quality – Specifications such as 10-5 scratch-dig and λ/10 transmitted wavefront directly influence cavity stability.
So, if you are designing a laser system it’s simple: Window specification has a measurable impact on system performance and long-term reliability.
At Manx Precision Optics (MPO), AR-coated windows are designed and manufactured in house alongside a wider portfolio of high LIDT coatings and precision optical components. If you are developing a high-energy or ultrafast system, talk to MPO for advice.
